Andrew Ripp: Fifty Miles To Chicago

Little Star Little Star Little Star Little Star
Label: Get Ripped Music

Recorded in Ripp's own back-house studio in Los Angeles Fifty Miles To Chicago sets out to capture the organic feel of 70s recordings and the honesty and immediacy that comes through the speakers when vinyl comes into contact with stylus. Whether this is ever fully achievable in this digital age is debateable but you can hear where Ripp wants to be and credit to him for that.

The gentle funk of 'Get Your Smile On' makes for an enjoyable introduction and I particularly warmed to the Cubanesque rhythms of 'The Privileged Life' - even though the solo guitar work struggles to find a comfortable role within the song.

Ripp is the possessor of a wonderfully warm and soulful voice. Perhaps the albums' best moments are during the more reflective middle section where the more contemplative nature of songs such as 'Lifeline' and 'On My Way' allow the space for Ripp's voice to really shine.

Fifty Miles To Chicago has a warmth and openness that draws you in. Even when the songs are a little lightweight Ripp's voice takes them to a better place and leaves you wanting more.
