Rosie Doonan grew up in a family heavily involved in the North East of England's folk scene yet, on her debut solo album, eschews the now common regional accent 'over-egging' that seems to be the current nu-folk vogue.
Doonan instead draws upon such influences as Joni Mitchell and Carole King for the commerdally flavoured, quirky pop of'That Boy'. She can also do sombre and atmospheric, as per the sparse piano and vocals of 'Hold On', be ambitiously inventive - the symphonic. psych-tinged 'Little Boat', and folky, of course - on the shuffling, irresistible mandolin and acoustic guitar jaunt entitled 'The Girl I Used To Be'. It's not all quite so successful but there's sufficient of quality on Moving On to suggest that her musical journey is one worth watching.
