Even allowing for an unfortunate false start on 'Whiskey Is The Life Of Man' the initial impact of Bellowhead is nothing less than impressive. Sharply dressed, with a sound that is both warm and bold, they promise a special evening and, for the most part, deliver. In Jon Boden they have an engaging front man whilst John Spiers, his long standing duo partner, anchors the band with his assured melodeon skills creating a platform that lets the rest of the ensemble shine.
One of the pleasures of music is when recordings take on a new dimension when you hear them live. This was particularly true of 'I Drew My Ship Across The Harbour' which connected with me far more than on record and 'Kafoozalum' which took on a force and power only hinted at previously. The first half of the show was a satisfying showcase of the band's range with 'Fakenham Fair' being a notable highlight. A couple of the songs were so new that music stands were hastily erected, the freshness and complexity of one of these songs - 'The Weaver And The Handmaiden' - being responsible for Boden's best vocal of the night.
By the time that the band hit full throttle on 'Sloe Gin' the audience were bouncing with such enthusiasm that the poor floor boards of the rather elderly St George's Hall were creaking in protest. Bellowhead started this current tour with the reputation of being one of the best live acts in the country. Reputations can be burdensome things but on the evidence of this show it is one that is richly deserved and carried with ease. Not to be missed.
